If your ice maker stopped making ice, make sure it's switched on and the bail arm is down, the freezer is at 0–5°F, the water supply valve is open and the water filter isn't clogged (Las Vegas hard water clogs them fast). Check for a frozen fill tube and a jammed bucket. If water reaches the fridge but no ice forms, the inlet valve or ice maker module usually needs replacing.
7 checks you can do safely
- Check the switch. Make sure the ice maker is on and the bail arm or sensor isn't in the full/off position.
- Check the freezer temperature. It should be 0°F; above about 10°F ice production stops.
- Check the water supply. Open the valve behind the fridge or under the sink; test the water dispenser.
- Replace the water filter. Hard water clogs filters early — replace every 6 months.
- Look for a frozen fill tube. Ice in the tube that feeds the ice maker blocks water. A failed tube heater causes it.
- Clear the bucket. Break up clumped ice; reseat the bucket so the door and sensor close properly.
- Reset. Unplug the fridge for 5 minutes, or use the ice maker's test button if it has one.
When to call a technician
- Water flows at the dispenser but the ice maker never fills.
- Ice freezes solid in the door compartment again and again (Samsung, LG in-door ice makers).
- An ice maker error code returns (Samsung 33E, 39E; LG It, IS).
Stay safe
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before touching anything inside it, and never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or a microwave. If a code points to a part, the part has to be tested before it is replaced; we do that on the $75 diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair.
