Dust-clogged refrigerator condenser coils that need cleaning

Refrigerator Not Cooling? 8 Checks to Do Before You Call

If your refrigerator isn't cooling, check the temperature setting and demo mode, make sure food isn't blocking the vents, close the doors on a dollar bill to test the gaskets, vacuum the condenser coils, and listen for the freezer and condenser fans. Frost on the freezer's back wall, a clicking compressor or a fridge that runs nonstop but stays warm means a defrost, start relay or sealed-system problem that needs a technician.

8 checks you can do safely

  1. Check the settings. Fresh food should be set to 37°F and the freezer to 0°F. Make sure the fridge isn't in showroom/demo mode (lights on, no cooling).
  2. Give it time after a change. After a power outage or a big grocery load, allow up to 24 hours to settle.
  3. Clear the vents. Overpacked shelves can block the vent between the freezer and fresh-food sections.
  4. Test the door gaskets. Close each door on a dollar bill in several spots. If it slides out easily, the seal is leaking.
  5. Vacuum the condenser coils. Unplug the fridge, remove the bottom grille or rear cover and vacuum the coils. In dusty Las Vegas homes, do this every 6 months.
  6. Listen for the fans. With the freezer door switch pressed you should hear the evaporator fan; the condenser fan near the compressor should spin when it runs.
  7. Look for frost. Thick frost on the back wall of the freezer means the defrost system has failed.
  8. Check the location. A fridge in a hot garage or in direct sun can't keep up in a Las Vegas summer.

When to call a technician

  • The compressor clicks every few minutes and the fridge stays warm (start relay or compressor).
  • Frost covers the freezer back wall (defrost heater, sensor or control).
  • It runs constantly but never gets cold (sealed system or refrigerant leak).
  • An error code returns after a reset.

Stay safe

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before touching anything inside it, and never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or a microwave. If a code points to a part, the part has to be tested before it is replaced; we do that on the $75 diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my freezer cold but my fridge warm?

Usually the evaporator fan stopped or a defrost failure iced the coil and blocked the airflow.

How long can food stay safe in a warm fridge?

About 4 hours with the door closed; a full freezer holds about 48 hours.

How much does refrigerator repair cost in Las Vegas?

Most repairs are $180–$650; sealed-system repairs about $700–$1,800. The $75 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.
