Likely causes

  • Failed evaporator fan motor

Try this first

Listen for the fan inside the freezer with the door switch pressed. Make sure food isn't blocking the vents between the freezer and fridge sections.

How we fix it

We test the fan, damper and defrost circuit, replace the failed part and clear the ice so cold air flows back into the fresh-food section.

Both fridge and freezer are warm

Likely causes

  • Dirty condenser coils
  • Failed condenser fan motor

Try this first

Pull the kick plate and look at the coils: if they're gray with dust, vacuum them. Make sure the condenser fan spins when the compressor runs.

Frost or ice build-up in the freezer

Likely causes

  • Torn or loose door gasket

Try this first

Close the door on a dollar bill in several spots; if it slides out easily, the gasket isn't sealing.

  • Clogged or frozen defrost drain

Re-seat the water filter. If water pools under the crisper drawers, the defrost drain is likely blocked.

Refrigerators in Las Vegas heat: what's different here

Most refrigerators are designed for room temperatures up to roughly 90–110°F. Las Vegas garages regularly go past that from June to September, which makes garage refrigerators run nonstop, overheat the compressor and fail early. Desert dust also clogs condenser coils faster than in milder climates, and our very hard water scales up water valves, filters and ice makers.

  • Vacuum the condenser coils every 6 months (every 3 months if you have pets).
  • Replace the water filter every 6 months.
  • Keep 1–2 inches of space behind and above the refrigerator for airflow.
  • If you keep a fridge in the garage, choose a garage-rated model and keep it out of direct sun.

Repair or replace your refrigerator?

Repair almost always makes sense for built-in and high-end refrigerators, and for any refrigerator under about 10 years old when the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new unit. A sealed-system repair is usually worth it on a Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking or Miele, and often not worth it on an older entry-level top-freezer model.
