New compressor installed in an LG refrigerator in Las Vegas with brass Lokring fittings instead of brazing

LG Refrigerator Compressor Replacement in Las Vegas: R600a Sealed-System Repair with Vulkan Lokring, No Brazing

An LG refrigerator in Las Vegas stopped cooling because its compressor had failed, worn out by years of running hot behind dust-clogged condenser coils. We replaced the compressor and the filter drier on its R600a sealed system using Vulkan Lokring mechanical fittings instead of brazing, evacuated the system, charged it by weight and confirmed normal temperatures. The best way to avoid this repair: clean the condenser at least twice a year.

Las Vegas loves LG refrigerators — and dust doesn't love them back

LG refrigerators are everywhere in Las Vegas homes: French-door, side-by-side and InstaView models with great features and efficient compressors. What many owners don't know is that the condenser — the coil that releases the heat the refrigerator pulls out of your food — needs cleaning. In the desert, with fine dust, pet hair and garage or kitchen heat, those coils clog fast. A clogged condenser makes the compressor run hotter and longer every single day, and eventually it fails.

Our rule for Las Vegas: clean the condenser coils at least twice a year, and more often if you have pets or the refrigerator sits in a warm room or garage.

The call and the diagnosis

The homeowner called because both the refrigerator and the freezer were warming up. Our technician ruled out the usual suspects first — fans, defrost system, airflow, controls — then tested the compressor and the sealed system. The compressor was no longer pumping, and the heavy dust on the condenser told the story of why. LG refrigerators often show error codes before or during a cooling failure; our LG refrigerator error codes guide explains them.

R600a: why modern compressors need modern methods

Practically every new refrigerator compressor runs on R600a (isobutane). It's efficient and environmentally friendly, but it's flammable. The traditional way to replace a compressor is to braze the copper lines with a torch — an open flame next to a flammable refrigerant, plastic liners and wiring. We don't do that. We use the German Vulkan Lokring technology: brass Lokring unions pressed onto the prepared tubes with a special assembly tool and LokPrep sealant, creating a permanent, hermetic joint with no heat at all.

The repair, step by step

  1. Safely removed the remaining refrigerant charge.
  2. Removed the failed compressor and installed the new R600a compressor.
  3. Installed a new filter drier, which is always replaced with the compressor.
  4. Joined every line with Lokring connectors — clean, deburred tube ends, LokPrep sealant, pressed unions.
  5. Pressure-tested, then pulled a deep vacuum to remove air and moisture from the system.
  6. Charged R600a by weight with a precision scale; hydrocarbon charges are small and must be exact.
  7. Cleaned the condenser coils and fan, then monitored temperatures and amperage until the refrigerator was cold.

Why we use Lokring

  • Safety: no open flame near flammable R600a, wiring or plastic.
  • Speed: joints take minutes, so the system is open for less time.
  • Reliability: a permanent, hermetic connection built for refrigeration pressures and vibration.
  • No heat damage: nothing nearby gets scorched in a cramped machine compartment.

Result

The refrigerator and freezer pulled down to normal temperatures and the compressor cycled normally. Compressor replacement typically costs $900–$1,800 depending on the model; cleaning the coils twice a year costs nothing but a few minutes.

How to clean LG refrigerator condenser coils

  1. Unplug the refrigerator.
  2. Find the condenser: behind the lower front grille on some models, behind the lower rear access panel on most LG refrigerators.
  3. Vacuum the coils and the fan area with a brush attachment; a long coil brush reaches between the rows.
  4. Clear dust from the floor and the wall behind the refrigerator, refit the panel and plug it back in.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my LG refrigerator compressor fail?

The most common cause we see in Las Vegas is long-term overheating from dust-clogged condenser coils, which makes the compressor run hotter and longer every day.

How often should I clean my refrigerator coils in Las Vegas?

At least twice a year, and more often with pets or if the refrigerator is in a warm room or garage.

Can an LG refrigerator compressor be replaced?

Yes. We replace the compressor and filter drier, evacuate the system and charge R600a by weight. It typically costs $900–$1,800.

Why don't you braze R600a systems?

R600a is flammable. Vulkan Lokring fittings make a permanent hermetic joint without an open flame, which is safer and faster.
