Stacked Dryer Repair in Henderson: Two Squeaking Maytag Dryers, Worn Rollers and a Hidden Lint Fire Hazard
Two stacked Maytag dryers in a Henderson home began squeaking loudly and their drums wobbled. Inside both dryers we found worn drum support rollers, worn idler pulleys and stretched belts, plus a thick layer of lint packed around the blower, the heating element and the base — a real fire hazard. We replaced all of the moving wear parts, cleaned the inside of both dryers and their exhaust vents, and both now run quietly with a steady drum.

The call: two dryers squeaking and drums wobbling
A Henderson homeowner with two stacked Maytag laundry pairs called us because both dryers had started to squeak, and the drums had begun to wobble and thump during the cycle. Loads were also taking longer to dry. When two dryers of the same age start making the same noise, it's almost always the same wear parts — and that's exactly what we found.

What we found inside: worn parts and a lot of lint
With the front panels off, the cause of the noise was obvious: the drum support rollers had flat spots and dry bearings, the idler pulleys were worn and the belts were stretched, so the drums no longer sat true and rocked as they turned.
The bigger concern was the lint. Both cabinets were packed with it: on the floor of the dryer, around the drive motor, inside the blower housing and around the heating element and its thermostats. Lint is fine, dry and extremely flammable, and here it sat right next to the part that gets red-hot.

Why dryer lint is a fire hazard
The U.S. Fire Administration reports thousands of home clothes dryer fires every year, and failure to clean is the leading cause. Lint escapes the lint screen over time, collects inside the cabinet and the vent, and restricts airflow. With less airflow the dryer runs hotter and longer, the high-limit thermostat works harder, and the lint sitting next to the heater can ignite. Stacked units in closets and laundry rooms are especially prone to it because the vent runs are often long and bend sharply behind the machines.
Warning signs: clothes take more than one cycle to dry, the top of the dryer or the laundry room gets hot, a burning smell, lint around the door or behind the dryer, or the outside vent flap barely opens while the dryer runs.
The repair, step by step
- Disassembly. Stacked pairs leave little room, so we opened each dryer in place without unstacking or damaging the washers below.
- All moving wear parts replaced. New drum support rollers, idler pulleys and drive belts on both dryers, with the drum glides and bearing surfaces inspected so nothing worn went back in.
- Deep internal cleaning. We removed the lint from the base, the motor, the blower wheel and housing and around the heating element, thermostats and wiring.
- Vent cleaning. We cleaned the exhaust ducts from the dryers to the outside and replaced a crushed, lint-filled section of transition duct with new aluminum duct.
- Testing. We reassembled, checked the drum runs true and quiet, and ran a heat cycle on each dryer to verify airflow, temperature and the safety thermostats.

Result
Both dryers run quietly with a steady drum, dry a normal load in one cycle again and no longer carry a cabinet full of lint next to the heater. On rollers, idlers and belts, a dryer usually costs $200–$350 to put right; doing both dryers in one visit kept it to a single trip.
How to keep a stacked dryer safe and quiet
- Clean the lint screen before every load, and wash it with soapy water now and then if you use dryer sheets.
- Have the vent run from the dryer to the outside cleaned at least once a year, more often in a busy household.
- Have the inside of the dryer cleaned every one to two years; lint gets past the screen no matter how careful you are.
- Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, never plastic or foil that crushes behind the machine.
- Don't ignore a new squeak or thump: worn rollers and idlers are cheaper to replace before they damage the drum or motor.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my dryer squeaking?
Usually worn drum support rollers, a worn idler pulley or a glazed or stretched belt. On these Maytag dryers it was all three.
Why does my dryer drum wobble?
Worn rollers or drum glides let the drum sit off-center, so it rocks and thumps as it turns. Replacing the worn parts brings it back true.
Can lint inside a dryer cause a fire?
Yes. Failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires. Lint that builds up inside the cabinet and vent restricts airflow and can ignite near the heater.
Do you clean dryer vents in Henderson?
We clean the dryer's exhaust path and vent run as part of dryer service in Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Boulder City.
