Problem & Solution

A jammed disposal usually needs minutes — a worn one needs a replacement.

Red Rock Appliance Services unjams, repairs and replaces garbage disposals and repairs trash compactors in Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City. Clearing a jam usually costs $100–$175, and a new disposal installed costs about $300–$600 depending on horsepower. We don't repair plumbing leaks. The $75 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

Most disposal calls are jams: a fruit pit, bone or utensil locks the flywheel and the motor hums or trips its reset. We clear the jam, reset the motor and test it. When a disposal is worn out, rusted through or seized, we replace it with a new unit sized for your household.

We don't repair plumbing leaks or drain lines. A disposal that leaks from its own body is worn out, and replacement is the fix.

Troubleshooting guide

Common disposal and compactor problems and how we fix them

Never put your hand in a disposal. Turn the power off at the switch and the breaker before any check.

Disposal hums but doesn't grind

Likely causes

  • Jammed flywheel (pit, bone, utensil)
  • Seized motor bearings

Try this first

With the power off, insert a 1/4-inch hex key in the socket on the bottom and work it back and forth, then press the red reset button.

How we fix it

We clear the jam and test; if the motor is seized, we replace the disposal.

Disposal does nothing at all

Likely causes

  • Tripped thermal reset
  • Failed wall or air switch
  • Tripped breaker or GFCI
  • Burned-out motor

Try this first

Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit and check the GFCI outlet.

How we fix it

We test power, the switch and the motor and repair or replace.

Grinding, rattling or very slow grinding

Likely causes

  • Metal or glass object inside
  • Worn grinding ring or impellers
  • Undersized disposal

Try this first

With power off, use tongs to remove anything you can see.

How we fix it

We remove the object or replace a worn disposal with a properly sized one.

Water leaking from the disposal

Likely causes

  • Corroded disposal body
  • Worn internal seals

Try this first

Note where the water comes from.

How we fix it

A disposal leaking from its body is worn out: we replace the disposal. We don't repair drain-line or plumbing leaks.

Trash compactor won't compact

Likely causes

  • Failed drive motor
  • Worn power screws or nuts
  • Broken drive chain or belt
  • Bad directional switch

Try this first

Make sure the drawer is fully closed and the key switch is on.

How we fix it

We replace the motor, power screws, chain or switches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about garbage disposal repair in Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City.

How much does it cost to fix a garbage disposal?

Clearing a jam usually costs $100–$175. A new disposal installed costs about $300–$600 depending on size and model.

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not work?

The flywheel is jammed. With power off you can try turning it with a 1/4-inch hex key from underneath, then press reset. If it's still stuck, the motor may be seized.

Do you replace garbage disposals?

Yes. We remove the old unit and install a new disposal sized for your household.

Do you fix leaking disposals?

We don't repair plumbing leaks. If the disposal itself is leaking from its body, we replace the disposal.

Do you repair trash compactors?

Yes, Broan, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, Kenmore and others: motors, power screws, chains and switches.

What can't go in a disposal?

Bones, fruit pits, grease, coffee grounds in quantity, pasta, rice, eggshells and fibrous peels like celery and corn husks.

What warranty do you give?

Every repair includes a 90-day labor warranty and up to 1-year parts warranty; new disposals also carry the manufacturer's warranty.
