If a trash compactor won't start, check that the key switch is on, the drawer is fully closed and the outlet has power. If the ram moves but doesn't compact, or stops partway, the drive motor, power screws, chain or belt are usually worn. Overloading with bottles or hard items jams the ram.
5 checks you can do safely
- Key switch. Most compactors need the key switch turned on before they'll run.
- Close the drawer fully. A drawer safety switch stops the cycle if the drawer is even slightly open.
- Check power. Reset the breaker; many compactors share a circuit with the dishwasher or disposal.
- Let it cool. After heavy use the motor overload trips; wait 20–30 minutes and try again.
- Check the load. Remove glass bottles and hard objects that can jam the ram.
When to call a technician
- The motor hums but the ram doesn't move.
- The ram moves unevenly or stops partway.
- It smells hot or trips the breaker.
Stay safe
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before touching anything inside it, and never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or a microwave. If a code points to a part, the part has to be tested before it is replaced; we do that on the $75 diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair.
