Commercial modular ice machine on a storage bin

Commercial Ice Machine Not Making Ice? 7 Checks Before You Call

If a commercial ice machine is slow or not making ice, check that the water is on and the filter cartridge isn't clogged, clean the air-cooled condenser, make sure the room isn't overheating the machine, look for scale on the evaporator (common with Las Vegas hard water) and confirm nothing is blocking the bin control. If water and airflow are fine and it still won't freeze or harvest, it needs a technician.

7 checks you can do safely

  1. Check the water supply. Make sure the supply valve is open and water reaches the machine.
  2. Change the filter. Hard water clogs ice-machine filters well before their rated life.
  3. Clean the condenser. Air-cooled condensers pull in grease and dust; clean them monthly in a kitchen or bar.
  4. Check the room temperature. Back rooms above 100°F cut ice output sharply; make sure hot air can escape.
  5. Look for scale. White build-up on the evaporator slows freezing and stops harvest; run the clean cycle with an approved cleaner.
  6. Check the bin control. Ice or an object against the bin sensor makes the machine think the bin is full.
  7. Check the drains. A clogged bin or machine drain can cause leaks and shutdowns.

When to call a technician

  • It freezes but won't harvest, or makes a solid sheet of ice.
  • Production stays low after cleaning and a new filter (refrigeration or valve problem).
  • Slime, mold or bad-tasting ice — it needs a full clean and sanitize.

Stay safe

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before touching anything inside it, and never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or a microwave. If a code points to a part, the part has to be tested before it is replaced; we do that on the $75 diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair.
