Most commercial laundry downtime comes from drains, doors and airflow. For washers, check the drain valve or pump for socks and coins, make sure the door locks and the load isn't unbalanced. For dryers, clean the lint screens and lint compartment, check the exhaust and the gas supply, and look for a tripped high-limit. Machines that still won't run need a technician; payment-system faults go to your card provider.
7 checks you can do safely
- Check the drain. Socks, coins and lint in the drain valve or pump are the most common washer stoppage.
- Check the door. A worn latch or lock keeps front-loaders from starting or spinning.
- Rebalance. Single heavy items (rugs, comforters) trip out-of-balance shutdowns.
- Clean dryer lint. Clean screens and the lint compartment daily; restricted airflow causes no-heat faults.
- Check the exhaust. Crushed or clogged ducts and stuck dampers trip airflow (sail) switches.
- Check gas and power. Confirm gas valves are open and breakers haven't tripped.
- Note the code. Record the display code and machine number before calling.
When to call a technician
- Washer won't drain with a clear drain path.
- Dryer won't heat with good airflow and gas.
- Loud roar during extract (bearings).
Stay safe
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before touching anything inside it, and never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or a microwave. If a code points to a part, the part has to be tested before it is replaced; we do that on the $75 diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair.
