Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana and KitchenAid washers share the same F-code system. F8E1 means not enough water is coming in, F9E1 means a long drain (over 8–10 minutes), F5E1–F5E3 are door or lid lock problems, F3E1 is the water-level pressure sensor, F7E1 is a motor speed (tach) signal fault, F0E2 is an overloaded tub and F8E3 is an overflow. Start with the faucets, hoses and a 5-minute unplug; F3, F7 and repeated F5 codes need a technician.
Try this first
- Unplug the washer for at least 5 minutes, then plug it back in and restart.
- Open the hot and cold faucets fully; check the inlet hoses for kinks and the inlet screens for hard-water scale.
- Check that the drain hose isn't kinked and isn't pushed more than about 4.5 inches into the standpipe.
Water and drain codes
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|
| F8E1 | Not enough water detected coming in | Open both faucets, straighten hoses, clean inlet screens (Las Vegas scale clogs them). Avoid anti-flood devices that cut pressure. |
| F8E3 | Overflow — water level too high | Turn off the faucets. Usually an inlet valve that won't shut off — call. |
| F9E1 | Long drain — draining takes more than 8–10 minutes | Check the drain hose and standpipe; a clogged or failed pump is next. |
| F3E1 | Water-level pressure sensor signal out of range | Technician repair (sensor, its hose or wiring). |
Lid, door and load codes
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|
| F5E1 | Door or lid switch problem — unlocked when it should be locked | Unplug 5 minutes and retry; repeats mean the lock assembly. |
| F5E2 | Lid or door won't lock — obstruction or failed lock | Clear anything under the lid; check the latch. Repeats need service. |
| F5E3 | Lid or door won't unlock | Don't force it. Unplug and retry; repeats need the lock assembly. |
| F0E2 | Too much load in the tub | Remove some items and restart. |
| F0E1 | Load detected during the clean-washer cycle | Empty the drum and check nothing is caught between basket and tub. |
Motor and control codes
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|
| F7E1 | Motor speed (tach) signal fault | Technician repair (motor, sensor or wiring). |
| F6E1 / F6E2 | Meaning varies by model — sources give different definitions (communication between boards) | Model-specific: a technician visit is needed to find the exact cause. |
| F1E1 | Main control fault | Unplug 5 minutes; repeats need a control board. |
Codes and their meaning can vary by model and production year, and the same code can have different causes. Where sources disagree we say so; in every case the exact cause is confirmed only by a technician's on-site diagnosis. Your owner's manual has the definitive list for your model.
Stay safe
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before touching anything inside it, and never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or a microwave. If a code points to a part, the part has to be tested before it is replaced; we do that on the $75 diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair.
