If your oven won't heat, check the breaker (electric ovens use a 240V double breaker), make sure the gas valve is open on gas models, confirm the oven isn't in demo, Sabbath or delay-start mode, and watch the igniter or bake element. A gas igniter that glows for over 90 seconds without lighting is weak and needs replacing; an electric element with a visible break has burned out.
6 checks you can do safely
- Check the breaker. Electric ovens need both halves of a 240V breaker; one tripped half can leave the oven cold.
- Check the gas valve. On gas ranges, the valve behind the range should be open and the cooktop burners should light.
- Check the mode. Demo/showroom, Sabbath or a delayed start all stop heating.
- Watch the igniter. Through the window, a gas igniter should glow and light the burner within about 90 seconds.
- Inspect the elements. Electric bake and broil elements with blisters or breaks have failed.
- Read the code. GE F-codes, LG F9/F19, Samsung C-codes and Frigidaire F10/F30 point to specific parts.
When to call a technician
- The igniter glows but the gas never lights (weak igniter or safety valve).
- The oven heats unevenly or 25°F+ off (sensor or calibration).
- You smell gas — leave the home and call Southwest Gas first.
Stay safe
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before touching anything inside it, and never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or a microwave. If a code points to a part, the part has to be tested before it is replaced; we do that on the $75 diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair.
